Herein lies a brief description of the categories you can choose from when selecting a character, including physical stats, strengths, or weaknesses true to the entire category. Hunters These are the people who possess some knowledge about the supernatural world and have devoted their lives to stopping it. Each Hunter goes about this task differently. Some specialize in hunting certain species, while others track down anything and everything supernatural they find. Some are able to see shades of grey, while others believe that anything possessing a touch of the supernatural should be destroyed. Whatever their pasts or personal motivations, however, Hunters are driven by a desire to protect themselves and other humans from what they perceive to be supernatural threats.

Vampires These aren't Bram Stoker's vampires. They have no fear of crosses, garlic, or holy water, and a stake to the heart might hurt, but won't kill them. They are visible in mirrors, and can walk in the sunlight. Humans are turned when their blood is mixed with that of a vampire, sort of like a demonic virus. Symptoms: Aversion to light (they can go out in the sun, but bright light hurts their eyes and they sunburn real fast), increased physical strength, immortality (unless killed), and an insatiable thirst for blood (save that from a dead man, which acts as a poison to a vampire's system). Vampires tend to be fiercely loyal to their own, and when they mate, they do so for life. They usually live and travel in small groups, setting up "nests" where they live and bring their victims to be killed. Not all vampires are bloodthirsty monsters, however. Well... bloodthirsty, yes, but that does not necessarily make them evil. Some vampires actually resist their desire for human blood, using animal sources to keep from killing. This might be out of compassion or out of a simple desire to keep off of a Hunter's radar, but either way, it proves that humans and vampires have the capacity to coexist peacefully, if need be. A vampire looks just like a human being, until it is time to feed. Then an extra set of fangs protrude from where they had been hidden within the gums under its top lip, revealing the demon's true nature. The only way to kill a vampire (save the Colt or a weapon with similar power) is by beheading them. [Written by Sam Winchester]

Werewolves Despite all of the stories, true werewolves actually bear very little resemblance to actual wolves. Those infected (by being bitten by other werewolves) will lose control of themselves and become feral creatures on the four nights surrounding a full moon. They grow sharp claws on their hands, their teeth lengthen and sharpen, and they become stronger than they would be in their human form, but otherwise they are physically indistinguishable from humans. The most obvious change is in their behavior, as they become violent, snarling beasts. It is not inevitable for the wolf to take over, however. The change occurs only when the infected party is asleep while the full moon is out, so staying conscious throughout one of the full moon nights will prevent the wolf from taking over. If the infected falls asleep for a moment, however, the wolf will take over. Whether they wish to be or not, werewolves are very dangerous creatures. The infected don’t remember anything during their time as wolves – they simply go to sleep one night and wake up the next morning surrounded by devastation, the night before a dreamless blank slate. There are two ways to kill a werewolf: either stab or shoot it in the heart with silver, or find it in its human form and kill it as you would a regular human.

Shapeshifters There are many types of shapeshifters in the world. Perhaps the most common in the US right now are Skinwalkers, who assume the forms of other people by shedding their own skins. This makes the transformation difficult and far from subtle. Once they have changed, however, they are practically indistinguishable from those they have transformed into. As time goes on, the Skinwalker even begins to absorb the memories of the one it has transformed into, so long as that person is still alive. The best way to catch a Skinwalker is by looking at their eyes through a surveillance camera or videotape, where their eyes give off a strange, luminescent glow. Aside from Skinwalkers, there are those who use animal skins to transform into that animal, such as the Bearwalkers or Nahuales. Some even possess the power to change shape without putting on or removing any skin. Sometimes it's a mystical creature that changes shape to appear human (kitsunes, selkies), and sometimes a human just has the ability to change its appearance on its own.

Specials During their infancy, these children were chosen by the demon Azazel to become his generals in the upcoming war against humanity. It isn’t clear why exactly these children were chosen, but it may have been due to some connection to the children’s mothers. A ritualistic drinking of Azazel’s blood on the six month anniversary of their birth left these children with a demon taint that would manifest itself during their twenty-third year. Before then, these Special Children had been for all appearances perfectly normal, but shortly after turning twenty-three they each began developing some sort of supernatural power, be it psychic visions, persuasion, a burning touch, superhuman strength, or something else altogether. Some Specials tried to ignore their emerging powers, while others have been driven to use them to help others. Then again, there are always a few who have taken the power to use for their own selfish gain. But Azazel isn’t one to sit idly by and allow these children to use their powers as they please. He only wants the best of the best to lead his army, and he will push them however hard he thinks necessary to make them strong. Requirement: All Specials must have been born in 1983 (and thus be 24 years old).

Psychics Unlike Special Children, psychics are born with inherent, natural abilities connecting them to the world of the supernatural. These traits are genetically passed on, though it is possible for them to lie dormant for generations before re-emerging. Usually, psychic powers manifest themselves through an attunement to the supernatural, such as being able to sense ghosts or the presence of demons, or being able to read the future through mediums such as tarot cards or crystal balls. One example of a psychic on the show was Missouri from the season one episode, Home. She was able to sense a poltergeist’s spirit, as well as Sam’s emerging abilities.

Demons The term "fallen angel," though poetic, is not a completely accurate one to describe demons. These dark creatures are actually born from fallen humans - the souls of those who have lived so long in hell that they have forgotten their human lives. Centuries of darkness, pain and torment have twisted these former humans into cruel, ruthless beings. Being essentially spirits, demons must possess a human host in order to take corporeal form on earth. Despite being in human bodies, the demon's presence boosts physical strength and endurance, and allows the body to survive injuries that ordinarily would have killed it. However, the demon's presence is then the only thing keeping the body alive, and when its presence is removed the old wounds will re-emerge, killing the host. There are several classes of demons, recognized most notably by the differences of their true eye color when in human form. The presence of demons can also be noted by the sulfur sometimes left in their wake. Black-Eyed Demons The most common demon type roaming the earth. These demons can be exorcised back to hell or killed by special weapons such as the Colt or Ruby's special dagger (introduced in season 3). They flinch at the name of God and burn when touched by holy water, can be contained by the Devil's Trap and can be kept away by using lines or circles of salt. Red-Eyed Demons These demons appear at crossroads to made deals with unhappy or desperate mortals. Usually they are summoned, but sometimes appear to have free reign to go where they please to strike a deal (see Bella's deal in season 3). These deals, sealed with a kiss, give humans any one wish, to enjoy for an agreed period of time (usually 10 years) before their souls are taken to hell. Red-eyed demons have little power besides that of the wishes and, like black-eyed demons, can be caught in devils traps, exorcised to hell, and can be killed with the Colt or a similar weapon. Yellow-Eyed Demon Yellow-Eyed demons have powers far exceeding that of Black or Red-eyed demons. Their mere presence tends to wreak havoc on an area in the human world, in signs such as cattle deaths, electrical storms, electronic shortages, and clocks stopping. Salt and holy water do not affect this level of demon, though it can still be killed with the Colt or a similar weapon. White-Eyed Demons The rarest and most powerful of all are the White-eyed demons. Highest up in the hierarchy, with many of the lower demons answering to them, these demons can cause great explosions resulting in a devastating loss of life. The Colt will still have the power to kill these demons, but little else is known about their strengths or weaknesses.

Witches Humans that use spells, jinxes, curses, or potions to manipulate the world around them are known as witches. These individuals can work alone or in a coven, and most often gain the powers to work a spell by pledging themselves to a demon.

Ghosts Ghosts are the remnants left behind after someone dies in a particularly violent way. They are usually bound to one specific task - a need to get revenge, to send a message, or to protect a certain person - and this task is the reason that kept them from moving on after their deaths. The longer ghosts remain on earth after their deaths, the more they lose their human thoughts and personalities. Strengths: inhumanly fast, can flicker from one place to the next in a heartbeat. They have a power, much like telekinesis, to move heavy objects or people with a thought. They are immune to most physical attacks, and can become non-corporeal. Weaknesses: Iron weakens them, and they can't pass through a solid line of salt. The spirits can be destroyed (though what exactly this "destruction" means for the soul is unclear) by burning any human remains of the ghost, or, in extreme cases, the remains of a very personal object of the ghost (See season 1's "Bloody Mary")

Civilians Any human who does or does not know about the supernatural creatures of the world, and has not dedicated himself to hunting them. Civilians more often than not try not to involve themselves in the affairs of the supernatural, but can act as informants or allies. As long as you're human and don't fit into one of the other categories, you're probably a civilian. An example of a civilian would be Ash from season two, or Agent Henriksen.
