Sooo.... I know this forum's been pretty dead for a while, so I figure I'll stick a question up here: What are people's thoughts on the current season?
I feel like it just isn't catching me the way it used to. It's all right, I guess, but there are definitely things I haven't been happy about. Like, for example, the bringing of yet another supernatural facet to the Winchester history: that John's dad was a 'Man of Letters'. If it weren't family, if it had just been some random Man of Letters who tells them about stuff... I would have liked that better. I liked it when the Sam and Dean were special because they'd risen to such great heights from being ordinary people. Now it's like... they were always connected to the supernatural from their very core, their family had always been connected to the supernatural no matter which side it was. I wasn't a huge fan of their mom's side being a family of hunters too, but that was ok.
I also was not a fan of Sam's love interest arc. It could have been good, but the way they spent so much time flashbacking and the fact that they wrote that Sam didn't even try to look for his brother? I thought that was very out of character. That made Sam seem a horrible person and I just didn't think that was right.
Don't get me wrong, there were some fun eps and I do like the 'close the gates of hell' arc and the Naomi controlling Cas (1 s, thanks), but there was plenty I didn't like or was just very 'eh'.

I've gotta say, I actually gave up watching the show. For me and I think a lot of people, the show started falling apart after the (fantastic) season 5 finale. I held on through 6, which had some good stuff, and in 7 it turned into more of a "DVR and watch when there's nothing else to do" show. This year I popped in a couple of times and the brothers just seemed so OOC, and the Sam flashbacks felt like they belonged in One Tree Hill, and I just stopped watching. When Kripke left the heart really went out of the show.
Plan to close the gates to hell? They've been opened again (like in the season 2 finale)? That might be interesting to tune in for!

Noooooo, Molly, you can't give up!!! Really though, I do agree with both of you that this hasn't been the greatest season (and I think the Sam-subplot was pretty universally reviled). The season 5 finale was probably the show's high point, there definitely hasn't been an episode like it since. But I've still got too much love (and hope) for the boys to stop watching, even if it doesn't feel like it used to. Did anyone else here use to watch Stargate: SG-1? After the 8th season one of their leads left, the main enemy they'd been fighting for the entire show was defeated, and for seasons 9 & 10 they brought in 2 new team members and an entirely new alien threat. The feel of the show completely changed; it was like watching 2 different shows. Both were enjoyable (the first moreso, but still) but I usually have to think of them separately in my head. Anyway! Point being, that's what I'm more or less doing with SPN. It's like seasons 1-5 were the best, classic, Kripke seasons, and these are like a separate show. Still generally good, but you can't expect the same quality of writing or total plot consistency with the early years or you'll just get too frustrated.

The first half of the season started out really weak. It's like they had this great story planned out for Dean and Cas (lol you're right, one "s" makes much more sense!!) and just weren't sure how to fit Sam into it so they made him forget about helping Dean and get a pointless girlfriend. But (midseason spoiler alert!) she's out of the picture now and the brothers are back to being more or less brotherly; I'd give the second half of the season a chance, Molly!! Dean - yeah, it is a little weird that John's side of the family is related to the supernatural too, but we've known for a while that destiny's been running through these boys' blood. Cupid said that whole thing about Mary and John's marriage being a very big deal "up there" and I guess it's for more than just the Lucifer/Michael arc. I guess the theme of the show is more about these are two brothers who THOUGHT they were normal until destiny decided to start repeatedly hitting them in the face.

PS: I SOOOO thought that girl wasn't real. Sam was alone with Dean, Cas and Bobby all gone, longing for some connection and a normal life. He has a history of mental instability a la Lucifer. AND we know that he liked the name Amelia from the last season (with the "Amy Pond" character)! Her death weighed on him for a while and her name could've helped inspire his fake girlfriend. It would've been so perfect and creepy if he'd just been half-crazy for a year while Dean was gone, and would explain why he never looked for him without just making him the worst brother ever. Whatever, that's my headcanon.
(And I haven't had a chance to see the finale yet, so maybe they'll reveal that was the case all along somehow! That'd make me super happy.)

I officially adore your headcanon, Alonna. The end of the season really worked to make up for the awfulness that was the first 12 or so episodes. Just watch, pretend September through December never happened, and you should be able to enjoy the show again!

The season definitely went out on a high note.
I liked how it went back to basics a little toward the end. Not BASICS basics, 'cause closing the door to hell, and dealing with angels and prophets and trials isn't so much basic, but in the interaction between the brothers. They're at their best when Dean's being the big brother, looking out for Sam and taking out the bad guys, and Sam's being the sort of screwed up one with a destiny.
A lot of obsessive Dean-fans complain about Sam being a "special snowflake" or whatever because of the visions/Lucifer thing, and now he gets the trials, but I don't think Dean's any less focused on because Sam's the one with powers, demon blood addiction or whatever. Dean always has his own stuff going on, and he's even more central in some ways 'cause he's the one who has to hold things together and saves the day while Sam's collapsing from visions or trial fevers or whatever. Sam's the "magical" one and Dean's the physical one.
