Jonas considered the elder brother as he watched him go. The man had a rough exterior, the kind that made people a little more difficult to read. His eyes had held that roughness as well, but behind that mask was a weariness. A sadness even. Jonas pulled out a chair and sat at the table in the center of the room and looked to Sam. The younger brother had a more innocent look about him than Dean. More open. It was quite similar to the good and honest look he'd seen on Sam when they'd met about two years earlier, and yet Jonas could tell that the few short years had not left him unscathed. His eyes had seen things...
Jonas looked to his computer screen thoughtfully, feigning interest in connecting to the internet before he spoke. "Sam... On the phone it sounded like you already knew about my problem," he began. "What is it that you know?"

The question wasn't exactly a surprise, but Sam wasn't sure how to approach an answer. Lowering himself onto the edge of his bed, he tapped his fingers across the comforter in a halfhearted rhythm as he watched the priest boot up his laptop. Jonas was asking for way more than he realized with that question: basically, the story of Sam's life. It was way too much to tell, so the real question was: what actually mattered right now? What did Jonas need to know about?
The threat.
"You're right. This, uh... it's not exactly the first time we've encountered someone with powers like the girl claims to have. And if it is connected then..." He let out a long breath, rubbing at his forehead, and decided he was thankful that Dean was out of the room for this little explanation. "There's a demon; we call it the Yellow Eyed Demon. We don't know its real name, but we've been hunting it pretty much our whole lives. It killed our mom back when I was too young to remember and, uh..." Keeping a calm tone wasn't really that hard if he didn't think about his words too much: "our dad died a few weeks ago, and we're pretty sure the demon was behind it too." It took him a second to realize he'd stopped talking, his gaze fixed with a strange intensity on an unused outlet on the opposite wall. Blinking and shaking his head, he forced his mouth to start moving again.
"Anyway, whenever one of these uh... these people with powers shows up, it seems to be connected to the demon somehow. Not like they're working with it, but more like... I don't know, like it wants them for something." Max's mom had been killed the way his had, after all, twenty-three years ago. And then there was baby Rosie...
There was a loose thread in the comforter, and he realized he'd been tugging it out and looping it around his fingers absently as he spoke. He had at least ten inches' worth torn out, twisted around his fingers, turning them white. Comforter... seriously, what a stupid name for a blanket.
"It seems like a good chance that the demon the cult is summoning is our Yellow-Eyed Demon, or is in league with it somehow. And if it is..." He trailed off again. What was there to say? 'It's dangerous' was a ridiculous understatement. His gaze slid back to Jonas and he offered a mild half-shrug. "So anyway, last chance to get out while you can."

It was obvious Jonas had touched a soft spot almost before Sam started talking. Jonas sat in a thoughtful and empathic silence as Sam went over some of the specifics.
"I’m very sorry for your loss, Sam," Jonas said quietly. Sam and his brother had lost not one but both parents to this 'Yellow Eyed Demon'. That was a sad thought. A very cruel thought. He rubbed his palms together absently as he considered what Sam else had said.
People besides Alonna had powers like hers? Incredible. Almost unbelievable and yet why would Sam lie? And if it were so, why would a demon be involved? Sam had pretty much laid out that if these people, these very special people, were involved, then this demon was likely to be also. As if they were connected somehow.
And then there was the question as to why this same demon had killed Sam's parents. They’d been hunting it, he’d said, but had they been hunting it before the death of their mother as well? Or was that the catalyst? The wheels kept turning in Jonas’s head and intuition nagged at him. He tipped his head thoughtfully at Sam Winchester: the man who exorcised and hunted demons. And specifically hunted a yellow eyed demon.
And whenever this yellow eyed demon was involved…
But Sam clearly didn't want to talk about that or he would have mentioned it. Or maybe Jonas was just off base. Jonas looked back to the screen before him. It had fully booted and had automatically opened up his GPS tracking program (thank you Officer Michaels). A little red circle blinked on that mysterious estate in the middle of the woods.
He should respond to Sam's question. It hadn't really been stated as a question, but in essence it truly was. 'Now that you know some more, now that you know people have died, do you still want to be involved with this?'
"I’m seeing this through, Sam. It's my responsibility. I need to make sure people are safe. And if there is a demon involved... Well, I think I should especially be involved," the priest replied with a dutiful nod. "It pretty much lies in the job description, you know."

Most people would've run, or at least crept away quietly, from the idea of a high level demon with a plan. Jonas was definitely one of the good ones, and Sam made a mental note to look over his phone's call log and save the priest's number permanently for future cases.
"Ok then," Shaking himself out of his melancholy, Sam hefted his own laptop out of the bag by his feet and started booting it up. "Then let's figure out as much about this Amazarak guy as we can."
An initial google search wasn't all that promising. Even after trying various spelling variations, all he could find was that the demon was apparently mentioned in one of the books of Enoch in a list of fallen angels. ...That and there was a metal band named after the guy. Named by him? Sam spent a few seconds staring at a picture of the long-haired, punk-style "rock 'n roll" gesturing band members and briefly debated the possibility of the bored demon being a member of the band.
Hey, if he was a couple thousand years old and had a decade to wait until his epic end-the-world plan or whatever came into fruition, why not kill some time screaming about blood and destruction to an unsuspecting fanbase?
He snorted at the thought before X-ing out of the search window and glancing up at Jonas.
"Ok, so all I've got so far is that this is either a really old demon - old enough to have been considered a 'fallen angel' at one point - or a younger demon trying to get some subtle cred by stealing a name out of the Bible." Did the Book of Enoch count as part of the Bible? He get a mental shrug, hoping the priest wasn't offended.
"The fact that the cult is planning a big ritual to summon him means that either he doesn't want to come and they want to trap him and use him for something... but that doesn't really track with what Alonna said about him being their 'lord'... or he's locked away somewhere, probably trapped down in hell. Demons have no problem getting from point A to point anywhere on earth, but have a harder time clawing their way out of the underworld."
He didn't have a timeframe or anything, but the whole point of exorcisms was to get rid of a demon problem by tossing them back to where they'd come from. It stood to reason that a demon, once it was banished, would either need a few decades to get back to earth or some serious help from up here.
"What about you? Anything useful?"

"It's not mentioned in the Bible," Jonas corrected absently as he scanned a book he'd brought with him, a copy of the Book of Enoch that he'd acquired from a so called 'black arts dealer'. In truth the woman had been more of a historian, but 'black arts dealer' apparently brought in more customers. Not that that fact mattered to his congregation. Jonas pressed his fingers against the page looking for the entry. "No, nothing here either. ...Well, nearly nothing. Here, there's this section on what they call fallen angels. A group of creatures who forsook their Father and chose to follow Lucifer or to be involved with humans, some taking human wives, others teaching humans."
He paused, skimming the section. " 'Tamiel taught them the signs of the Sun while Asaradel educated them on the course of the Moon. Azazel taught them in the ways of swords of knives, shields, and metalwork and Amazarak taught them enchantments.' "
He looked up at Sam with a small smile. "Well, I guess that makes sense if a Cult is involved, right? So maybe they... pray to him or something?"

"Yeah, I well I'm just glad it high tailed it outta there and left us behind. I was half convinced I was in the world of the recently deceased. Again." Dean adjusted the cell phone between his cheek and his shoulder as he shifted the bags of fast food breakfast items in his arms and reached for the keys to the car.
"And I'm just glad someone decided to let me know you two survived," scolded the voice of Bobby over the line. "Idjits."
"Well, I'm sorry, Bobby, but we were kinda rushed out of that whole plot line. Cops and that sort of thing, you know?" Dean responded as he finally pulled open the car door and slid inside. "Besides, that's totally Sam's fault."
"'Course it is," Bobby drawled. He sighed and Dean could hear the sound of rustling papers. "Anyway, how did you boys get the Erlking to release his victims?"
"Dunno. Didn't really have time to chat about it. Rushed, remember?"
"Right. Well, I'm sure you didn't call just to check in, so what's going on?"
Dean pulled a breakfast sandwich out of the bag, still steaming hot. It's not like he should be driving and talking on the phone after all! With a mouth full of food, Dean quickly recounted what had happened post Erlking: the werewolf-Hunter showdown and the sudden reappearance of Sam's old buddy.
"You're not going after that demon are you?" There was a note of worry in Bobby's tone.
"We've got to. Girl's in trouble."
"This aint about no girl and you know it," Bobby replied. "Is it the Yellow-Eyed Demon?"
Dean paused, eyes hard. "Honestly, we don't know. If there's one of those demon blood kids involved... maybe. Sounds like the demon they're trying to contact is called "Amazarak". Sam and the priest are looking into it now, but I'm sure we could use anything you could turn up too. On the demon or the cult."
"Sure. But, Dean, promise me you won't go charging in there half-cocked. Demons are bad enough. The Yellow-Eyed Demon's even worse and if the thing's got groupies..."
"We'll be extra careful. Scout's honor. Thanks, Bobby," Dean replied. He heard an unsatisfied 'hmph' on the other end. "Oh, that reminds me. Ever heard of a hunter called Molly Rourke?"
There was a pause. "Sounds familiar. Why?"
"That's the other hunter I was tellin' you about. The hard core chick on a mission."
"If she's in the area, it might be good to have another hunter as backup," said Bobby. "But..."
"...But if she's as hard core, black and white as I think she might be, then having her around might put Sam and the girl in as much danger as the demon we're hunting. Exactly."
"I'll look into it, boy. You keep each other safe, you hear?"
"Yeah. Later, Bobby." Dean hung up, tossed the empty wrapper aside and headed back to the motel.

"I guess that means he probably is the same guy, then."
Sam rubbed at the back of his neck thoughtfully, wondering if there was any chance a 2,000 year old magic-gifting demon wouldn't be particularly harder to banish than your average, every day demon. Somehow he doubted a normal binding circle and a few choice words would work on this one, especially considering the effort it was apparently taking to summon him.
He'd never heard of a person with magic invisibility powers being needed to summon up a demon before. Not to mention...
"If he's keeping up with his old patterns, then, we'll have to expect this cult to have a few magical tricks up their sleeves."

Dean entered the motel, bags of food in one arm and a bag of weapons from the car in the other. They always brought some necessities into the motel with them, but if they were doing some demon hunting, they were going to need to get some new salt-rounds and make sure everything else they needed was in working order.
"Food's here," Dean announced, tossing the fast food bags down onto the table Sam and Jonas were working at then dropping the weapons onto his bed. "I hope you like egg and bacon sandwiches, Father Karras," Dean quipped with a look at Jonas as he headed for the coffee machine.
"So, you guys found the magic words to stop this whole demon summoning and rescued the damsel, right?" he asked, not waiting for a response.
-.-.-.-.- OOC: Ha! Let's see if you guys get that reference! I'll give you a hint. It has to do with what Jonas did with Sam.

OOC: Exorcising? The Exorcism movie? (The Exorcist! Yeah, I forgot the title of the Exorcist. Shaddup) Haha I'm sure Sam gets the reference even if it took me a minute. ---
"Oh yeah, we actually already headed out there. Saved the girl, sent her home... Figured she didn't need to deal with any cheesy romantic advances after the week she's had, so we didn't wait around for you to meet her." He paused for just a few seconds to let his brother register the dig before replying, seriously, "So far we've got next to nothing."
Sam pulled his sandwich out of the bag and its paper wrapper, lifting it halfway to his lips before setting it back down again, wiping his already-greasy hands on his jeans.
"We've got to go in tonight, but two Hunters and a priest aren't much in the way of firepower against a guarded estate and a cult." Actually, it sounded like the start of one of those bad jokes. 'Two Hunters and a priest walk into the mansion of a demon-summoning cult...'
Normally they dealt with rogue beasts in the woods. Breaking into a mansion guarded by humans... he suddenly felt way more Mission Impossible than he was really comfortable with. "Should we, I don't know, call in some backup?" Granted, 'backup' pretty much meant Bobby, and picturing him dodging security cameras and scaling 12 ft. tall iron gates... well, let's just say that Tom Cruise he was not.

Jonas opened his mouth to correct Dean about his name, but when Sam spoke first, not correcting his brother and instead joking about their progress (or lack their of), it finally occurred to Jonas that Dean too had been joking. It took him a moment of pondering before he caught the reference to the classic horror movie character and by then the brothers had moved on.
"Back-up? Is that a good idea? I mean... I know we aren't a lot but if a whole troupe of people go marching in there wouldn't it put Alonna in danger?" Jonas asked.
____________ OOC: I have to admit, without the hint (and accidentally scrolling down enough to see Sam's answer), I would've had to look that reference up. I haven't seen it myself, but that movie's a classic. When I picture Jonas's response to that, it ends up looking like he's having a Castiel 'I don't get it' moment.

OOC: Sam: Jonas: Ha! BIC: -.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Dean rolled his eyes at Sam. Wise guy. Then Jonas spoke up and Dean had to laugh. "There aren't really that many of us, man. Or at least not that many that are around here and are people we can rely on. Stealth is what we're aiming for, but we've gotta have the power to back ourselves up." Dean looked to Sam. "I did give Bobby a call on my way back here, so he's checkin' out this Amazarak thing too." Dean paused. "I've also got him looking into Molly."

The Hunter from Haven Valley? Sam honestly wasn't thrilled with the idea. She seemed tough, yeah, but was definitely more of a black-and-white-world kind of woman. If the choice came down to backing a group of regular humans with a penchant for black robes and someone with very decidedly non-human powers, who knew which side she'd come down on. Still...
"We could use whatever help we can get, I guess."

"Yeah, as long as help's what we'll be getting," Dean replied matter-of-factly. He took a long drink from his coffee mug and eyed the food still on the table, but instead moved to the bag of weapons on the bed. "I don't want any loose cannons on a demon hunt. There's enough that can go wrong already. We'll see what Bobby turns up in the next hour or so. Then we'll decide if we're gonna call her."

Jonas looked from brother to brother. Ok, so there wouldn't be a lot of people marching into danger... perhaps just one other person? One who apparently neither Winchester was terribly certain about? He didn't know how he felt about that. He didn't know how he felt about any of this, truth be told.
I don't want any loose cannons on a demon hunt. There's enough that can go wrong already. We'll see what Bobby turns up in the next hour or so. Then we'll decide if we're gonna call her.
"This isn't a demon hunt," Jonas said firmly, his voice deepening to an authoritative gravely tone. "This is a rescue. That must always come first."

Sam had forgotten how much he'd grown to like Jonas in the short time they'd worked together. The priest had this sense of conviction about what was the right thing to do that Sam had found himself lacking in the past few weeks, angry as he'd been at the universe at large. At the demon, in particular.
Yellow Eyes needed to pay. It had declared war on their family twenty-three years ago when it had torn apart their family, murdering their mother without cause. Sam's entire miserable childhood had been shaped by the actions of the demon, and Dean had never known any hint of normal because of it. And then, just when Sam had started to move on, tried to form something real and good in his life, the demon had torn everything away again. It was like he wanted them to hunt them. Wanted to die.
What other explanation was there?
...But Jonas was right. Whatever went down today, no other innocent people were going to end up dead as a part of this war.
"Innocents always come first," he answered, if only partly to hear himself say it. "And any backup we get's gonna be with us on that." He sighed, glancing back over their admittedly tiny amount of information. "Alright, let's work through what we have. Figure out how we're going in."

Dean pursed his lips thoughtfully as he began to clean out a shotgun. "You said that the place is set back pretty far in the woods, right?" Dean asked, though it was more rhetorical than because he didn't remember. "One way in... If somethin's going down tonight they'll definitely be on high alert..."
The elder Winchester put down the gun and rested his arms on his legs. "We've still got most of the day before the sun goes down and what your online maps told us isn't enough. We've got to get more details on the layout or there is no way we're going to be able to get in there, find the girl, rescue the girl, and get out without raising a fuss. I've got a plan on how we can do a little recon..."
He turned his attention directly to Jonas. "But you might not like it."

Jonas looked from Dean to the map on his computer. It was true. The image did not reveal details. The resolution just wasn't that good. And since it wasn't live video, it told them nothing about the current setup of guards (if there were any). But as Dean finished up, Jonas looked curiously, nervously, back to the man, then turned his gaze to Sam. Jonas didn't like the way the elder brother had turned specifically to him and it made his imagination ran with possibilities that he in particular would no like.
"What do you mean? I'll do what I can to help, but I can't condone less than... moral undertakings."

Dean shrugged. "Well I don't know if it's immoral, but I don't know how you people feel about impersonating priests for the greater good."

Jonas glanced to Sam, recalling under what circumstances it was that they became acquainted and while he wrestled with the uncomfortableness of that idea, he thought he saw where Dean was going.
"You want to... pretend you are priests? Lie about spreading the word of God in order to get close to the mansion and see what they've got going on there?" Jonas scowled and sat back in his chair, a hand pulling at his white collar. "How much would that really tell you? It's not like they'll invite you in to have a look around the place. More than likely a demon worshipping cult will just slam the door in your face or... or worse, maybe they will invite you in only to take you hostage and feed you to their demon."

Sometimes - rarely, but it happened - it worried Sam just how much he and Dean thought alike. He grimaced faintly at Jonas' take on the very con he'd pulled back when they first met.
"Well, at least then we'd be inside," he replied, only half joking. He and Dean usually did caves and abandoned houses, that sort of thing. Breaking into guarded mansions felt a little too Jack Bauer for his comfort zone. Maybe lying their way in would be their best bet on making it into the compound.
"Dean's right, we can't just go running in blind - we need to get a look at the layout. Posing as cops would be a lot worse, and it's not exactly like we can say we're selling girl-scout cookies. Sometimes a little dishonesty is worth it if it helps save lives."
