There'd been no call from the higher-ups, no message about what "needed to be done." Chase Anders was a professional, and he'd been in the game longer than he'd been able to drive. There were rules in this business, and the number one rule: secrecy. If anyone knew something they weren't supposed to, eliminate them.
And poor Brendan just seemed to know a little bit more than he should.
The mother, Chase knew, could be scared into silence, but the ex-boyfriend clearly had different ideas. If his behavior on that first day was any indication, he was willing to go to any lengths to warn Alonna about the Followers and their interest in her. And that was something Chase simply could not abide.
He'd borrowed Alonna's phone earlier that day - during a coffee date when she'd slipped off to the bathroom - and texted Brandon telling him to meet "her" at the town park at nine. Now Chase just had to wait in the treeline for him to arrive... and then make sure he didn't get a chance to talk to Alonna again.

The text had been unexpected, to say the least. After over a week of Alonna slamming doors, ignoring calls, and literally running down the street away from him, it had been more than he could hope for that she might out of the blue decide to listen to him. Emails had obviously been deleted, unread. Voicemails had gone unlistened to.
Not that he blamed her. He knew exactly how Alonna felt about her mother. In her mind, the woman was the devil incarnate. And after seeing them together, hearing what had turned out to be a confused muddle of “you need to go back to LA,” “modeling, acting, it’s the best thing for you” and, worst of all, “your mother knows what’s best for you, Lon, really”, Brendan knew that right now he might as well be Judas.
But she didn’t know what was going on. She didn’t know what kind of danger she was in.
He made it to the park at 8:50, and made his way slowly through the thicket of trees, squinting in the darkness for the sheen of Alonna’s pale hair in the moonlight.

He was punctual. Kind of dim, a bit too trusting considering the circumstances (hell, Chase had known Alonna for just a couple of weeks and even he could tell she wasn't the "meet me in an abandoned park after dark" kind of girl. She had too much common sense for that). But at least he was punctual. He had that going for him.
Chase waited patiently in the shadows until the other man had made it past him, so that Chase stood between him and the nearest street, and then he stepped out into the moonlight.
"Hey," he announced without preamble. "See you got my message."

And that was most definitely not Alonna’s voice greeting him.
He knew what a setup was. He’d grown up on cop shows and comics, had the concept down. He’d just never expected to find himself in one. Then again, his life had pretty much stopped making sense since Alonna’s mom had shown up at his door asking for help to save her daughter’s life.
And now here he was, standing in an empty park at night, staring down a guy with an eerie sort of emptiness in his eyes, with no backup, no friends, no one expecting to see him for hours… He swallowed, straightened his shoulders. He’d been in fights before, back in high school, and he had a few inches on this kid. If it came down to fists, Brendan wasn’t too worried.
“Alonna,” he remarked blithely, just to show how very, totally not shaken up he was. “You’ve changed.”

Chase quirked his lips and inclined his head, acknowledging the jest. At least he didn’t have to deal with a blubbery idiot. That would make this encounter marginally more interesting. No need to beat around the bush, though.
“You know who I am, who I represent.”

He didn’t rise to the bait, getting right to business. It made Brendan edgy. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be around for “business”, whatever that ended up being. He had a pretty strong feeling it wouldn’t be good.
"Christine Swanson gave me the basics." She'd given him more than that, to be honest. Way more than he'd wanted to know.

"Old lady Swanson should've kept her mouth shut." Chase smirked, looking the other man over. "Though... I guess she was smart enough to pass the job onto you before getting outta dodge. That's her, always ready to do the right thing as long as she can get herself back to safety before hell breaks loose."
He respected that about the woman, really. From what he'd heard, she was an expert at keeping safely out of the line of fire. After all, she had knowledge about the Cult. They had every reason to want her dead, or at least kept under lock and key as a puppet, and she was still walking free. She wanted to keep her kid safe, but only so long as she didn't have to lay her own neck on the line to do it. The kid's boyfriend, an easy sacrifice.
She'd had to know this was coming. Why else would she have hightailed it back to the land of constant camera-protection?

Brendan swallowed, caught himself swallowing, and replaced it with a cleared throat. Much better. On to the offensive.
"She seemed a little freaked, yeah. And if she had stuck around, what, you big scary Cult guys would've sent her a fake text from her daughter, lured her out to a dark park alone at night?"

"Doubt she would've been dumb enough to fall for a fake text in the first place. I mean, seriously man, think it'll ever work its way through your head that she hates you? That the thought of you makes her sick. That she never wants to speak to you again?" A thought crossed his mind, a grin danced across his lips. "Better catch on fast, I think. No one wants to die in denial."

He shifted a step back, eyes flitting around the treeline. No one else there, no backup waiting in the wings. It was just the two of them. Just intimidation, that's all. Trying to scare him into silence, like this "cult" or whatever it was had done with Christine.
Brendan wasn't one to be intimidated. He stalked forward, came nearly into arms' reach, glowering.
"Think I'm afraid of you? Some punk kid? How old are you, twenty? Look, I'm going to be there for Alonna whether she wants me or not, and you're gonna back off. I hear you guys don't like publicity. Well how 'bout I call the cops, the papers? Hell, why don't I start a blog about this little group of yours? You leave her alone, get out of town, or you're in for more exposure than you can handle."

The amused smirk danced across his lips again. It was just too cute, this guy trying to play hero. Puffing up his chest, defending the honor of his girl. Chase hadn't been lying when he'd told Alonna he'd grown up on comics. What he hadn't mentioned was that he'd almost inevitably been drawn to the villains.
Far less predictable, and less... corny. The only reason Batman ever won a fight was because the writers wanted it that way. In the real world, the Joker would've been king of Gotham.
"Nice effort, but not that bright. Let me think... here you are. Alone. Middle of nowhere. Nowhere to run, no friends on your side... I think I probably would've avoided making myself looking like even more of a pest that needed to be eliminated."
His hand went to his waist, drew out his favorite dagger. Long and curved. A bit impractical due to its unique edge, but it wasn't like he was planning on letting the body be discovered anyway.
"A little advice, you know, to carry on into the next life."
