Alright, maybe it's the long summer break leaving me starved for episodes talking... but I thought this was epic. Not epic like the finale was epic. In fact, there were a lot of little things in the episode that should have ticked me off. Sam seemed far too cold and emotionless, he didn't accept the car keys. There suddenly being a whole wing of the family they never knew about. The Grandpa having vague "djinn poison antidotes."
And despite those things... or maybe even because of them... I thought the episode was epic. Maybe it was the way it was done. I have faith that all these weird little things were done purposely, and that there's a good explanation for them. Sam being suddenly cold - is it an aftereffect of being trapped in the deepest pit of hell? Of having Lucifer possessing him? Of drinking more demon blood than he'd ever had before? Or even something that his "new family" is doing to him?
The "new family" has already shown themselves to be doing something sneaky in capturing the djinn, which raises more questions: are they really family at all, or are they just using Sam (poor Sam, being manipulated again)? Is Grandpa really back at all? If so, were he and Sam brought back by good guys, bad guys? ...Was it even the same guy?
I'm excited. I want to know what secrets are lurking under the surface this season. And I want to see the brothers mending fences 'cause that was a pretty cold parting at the end of this ep.

I disagree. Epic is not the right word for this. I enjoyed it, but there was not enough edge of your seat compelling story for this to be epic.
I was wondering about Sammy's attitude too. And the way they played that definitely hints to me that something more is going on. I like that something's going on with 'the family' too. I was kinda iffy -still am- on the idea that suddenly there are more Campbells running around. At the very least I think there's something going on with Grandpa, but hopefully its more than what they suggested.
I was disappointed that there was so little brother interaction. It wasn't until like 9:40 that Sam and Dean had some alone time to chat and even then there was not enough explanation or worry/excitement/umph over Sam's escape from the "Cage". I'm pretty confident there's reasoning behind the coldness of Sam and that it's Sam's lack of response and explanation that Dean chose Lisa over going with his brother. There should have been more explanation or relevant plot points in this episode though. The djinn hunt just didn't do it for me. "Oh, you killed our dad a few years back, I guess we'll try and kill you guys now."
Just wasn't good enough.
But I am intrigued by this new Sam attitude... I just hope he doesn't stay like that! There's something wrong with him and he needs to be fixed!

The djinn thing was kind of strange. Personally I think it didn't happen randomly. It seems a little convenient for me that Sam & co. figured out that the djinn were after Dean too, but I think there's a reason behind that. Maybe it's just me hoping (and like I said, Supernatural-withdrawal might be making me see awesomeness that isn't there) but I have the feeling that the "family" might be more involved in that whole thing than we realize. Grandpa just seems a little too know-it-ally for me. Did he send the djinn after Dean?
That's my theory - he bribed or tricked the djinn to attack Sam and then Dean in an attempt to get Dean back into the game. He made a big point about how Dean had to be involved: "we need all hands on deck", "not a good time to play golf" etc. He was pushing Dean back into the Hunter life, for whatever reason. And he just conveniently knows the antidote for djinn poison? Is it far off to believe that he orchestrated the whole attack?

I'm kind of on the fence about this episode. While the djinn "revenge" plot was a little weak for a premiere, and I'm definitely unhappy that there weren't more meaningful Sam & Dean moments, I kind of agree with site!Sam. I have a feeling that they were doing those things on purpose. We're supposed to think that Sam's not acting normal. It could just be due to spending time in the hell-cage with Lucifer, or it could be something else, but I think figuring out what Sam's deal is is going to be part of this season's plot, so I'm intrigued.
That's an interesting theory, Sam! I'd wonder, if Samuel did arrange the djinn attack, why they had to put a bag over her head and drag her away, though.
Anyway, I think that how good this episode was, really depends on what they decide to do next. But I'm really excited to see what's in store!!

For me, it seemed like there was definitely a lot going on under the surface. Like you guys have said, if it was just a basic, run of the mill, "kill the djinn" episode, I would've been supremely disappointed, but it wasn't. There's definitely something going on with Sam. The thing that sealed it for me was the moment where he didn't take the car. I mean, that was THE car. The entire finale was about how important that car was to the brothers, and particularly to Sam, since all the memories of Dean and his life and brotherhood that sprung up from looking at that car are what let him overpower Lucifer. I mean, come on!! Chuck was talking about how it was their home, you know? Either Gamble's way off her game, or that was a major hint-hint to the fans.
It definitely got me interested.

Eve - my thought on that is that if the djinn was tricked into coming (Samuel & co. secretly provided the intel) then they'd need to snatch her because she wouldn't be complicit. Or even if they had been teamed up originally, she might not want to leave after two of her siblings had just been murdered.
Or maybe not. Maybe they're just stealing beasties to experiment on. But Samuel definitely wanted Dean back in the game for some reason.
