So a lot of us have probably heard the rumors already - that Supernatural is considering going on for another season after this one. That's all I've heard - rumors, with nothing conclusive one way or the other.
Now I love the show (despite this not being my favorite season ever) but I still have some serious qualms about it continuing on after the season all about the apocalypse. I mean, how can they really follow that?
Open forum: what does everyone else think about the show being renewed for a sixth season?

Noo!
I mean.. I love Supernatural, but noo!
They're going up against Lucifer! What can you possibly do after that that isn't completely lame by comparison?
And also, if they go the way that a lot of these season 5 episodes are going, I don't want them to ruin the show any more than they already have!

Yeah, that's generally my feel too. Although... since they're basically IGNORING the impending apocalypse this season, maybe they could just shove it off a little longer and have a season 6 that's actually devoted to working through the main problem. lol, I can totally see this just being "filler season!" and then in season six they get to the main stuff. I mean, I would hate it, but I can see it. And I'd really appreciate it if they started paying some attention to Lucifer, not to mention the Horsemen running rampant (two of which we haven't even caught glimpses of yet...)
Another fan rumor I've heard is that season six could be representing some sort of a major fallout - say maybe Lucifer somehow DOES snag Sam's body, or in some other way bring about his little apocalypse, and then season six would be the characters trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, fighting to find God or in some other way trying to get things back to a semblance of normal. Which kind of intrigues me... but again, I'm worried it would just screw everything up (more). I don't know, I'm seriously conflicted...
Like, if season six will be good, then I kind of want it. If it'll suck, then obviously no. But I don't feel like there's any real way to tell ahead of time.
I WILL note that I don't want it going on for 11 years, or however long freaking Smallville's been dragging on for. That show died about 7 seasons ago, seriously. Does ANYONE still watch it? Really, I'm curious.

:: Pats Eve::
There there. They aren't ignoring the Apocalypse. They've still got many episodes to go and they have had many episodes dealing with the Apocalypse and Lucifer and his Horsemen. They've always been like this, the other seasons I mean. Save season 4, I think, and I think that's just cause they had two arcs that they could go with. The intro to angels and the intro to Sammy's blood addiction.
Back to the topic! Season 6? I love this show. It's one of my all time favorites, but I agree with you guys. I do not want this show to hit a climax here then have another season just for the sake of making more money.
But yeah, if they can make it work and have a good arc or continue the apocalypse arc with a Lucifer-Sam (O.O) or something worthwhile, then I say go for it. I would like to have a show to watch next year.
Eve: Heh, Smallville. I used to watch that show. I do know a few people who still enjoy it, but I lost interest. I hear it's getting better, but I think they've already messed up the Superman universe too much for me. I mean... they got rid of Lex Luther! He's a big bad! You get get rid of him!
Ah, well, whatever.

Kasen - I agree that this is the general format for the season, with a significant ep thrown in between one-shots, but I think the feeling some of us have (we were talking about it over on last-last week's episode thread) is that it SHOULD be different this season, since this isn't any old problem, this is the Apocalypse! You don't just ignore that to hunt low-on-the-foodchain ghosties. It just seems unrealistic that they wouldn't be focusing more energy on trying to stop the end of the world. ::Shrug::
Season six? I think you pretty much hit upon the deciding factor, Eve. If it's good, yay, if not, nay... but I don't feel like there's a lot of hope for a successful sixth season. The only real way I can see the show go on in anything more than a painfully extended denouement would be if Lucifer got what he wanted at the end of season five - if it ended with Sam saying yes. But then we'd pretty much go through season six with it being the Dean and Castiel show, with Samifer showing up every once in a while as the big bad... and I personally would have a problem with Padelecki's role being reduced to a recurring villain.
I mean, if anyone has any more promising ideas of how the season might go, I'd love to hear them...

Lol! I just stared at "Samifer" for a second in shock before bursting out laughing and scaring my roommate... and then realizing it was perfect. It's what he's gonna be called from now on, alright? It's just... so cute! But yeah, I agree with you - it would suck to see Jared's role reduced, since it would be pretty hard for Samifer to show up in every episode. And however much I love Castiel, I don't want to see him replace Sam as the second lead. Maybe Lucifer could have Sam's body for a few episodes, though - like this finale and then the start of the next season, messing up the world sufficiently to warrant a season's worth of post-apocalyptic cleanup? I don't know, I'm still really undecided...

Guuuys...... Ok, so I just... I don't know. I guess I'm trying to be hopeful. I'm really gonna try to be hopeful. Don't know if you've heard yet, but Supernatural HAS been renewed for a sixth season. Yay? Bad news - Kripke is stepping down as the "showrunner". Meaning... director/idea guy and general-overarching plotitarian, I guess. Good news - Sera Gamble (producer with the show since season 1) is going to be taking over for him. So she's been with it for a long time, she knows what the show's about, and will hopefully try to hold to the feel of the show we love so much. But really just... what are they gonna do? This article (below) makes it sound like this season will be the end of the Heaven vs. Hell "arc" (arc meaning the entire point of the show until now). Are they going to reset back to the beginning? Where are they going to go from here? In my opinion, shows have to be building toward something, and what could they possibly lead to that'll be bigger than Lucifer? Are they going to start dealing with the Greek gods next? Aliens? Or are they going to have to start a fight with God himself? I just... I don't know. I wasn't sure which side of the fence I was on before, but now that the next season's confirmed I'm pretty severely wishing they'd just ended it with five... Article

I'm worried about that myself. I've had faith in the show for ages in a large part because Kripke was at the helm and it's his baby. But now he's stepping down? That's a little frightening. Things to quiet my concern: A) he's not completely leaving and B) you do always hear about the team effort of the show and the person taking over is part of that team soooo... they can't mess it up completely, right? Hopefully. Seriously, I think I'd be really happy if they just ended the show this season. I don't like it when tv shows get abused when their ratings are up to the tv station's standards. If most of the SPN crew is staying on, I think we'll be ok... but, the question still remains... How can you have a bigger story than the apocalypse? But on the other hand, again, I love this show and I'd like to see more stories with these characters! ...I'm so conflicted!

Eh, I'm definitely concerned... but on the other hand, we've got to remember that not only Kripke, but Jared and Jensen have definite standards for the show, and I don't think they'd be agreeing to continue the show unless they thought it was really worth it. Unless they've completely sold themselves out in the past 10 months or so, this article should give us some comfort:
Fifth Season The Last For ‘Supernatural’? Creator, actors say it won’t go on forever
By MICHAEL HINMAN Apr-02-2009
“Smallville” is getting a ninth season, but don’t expect “Supernatural” to go that far.
Eric Kripke doesn’t care what the ratings are on The CW … after the fifth season, he’s done.
“Despite what the network and studio may or may not want, I don’t have more than five seasons of a story,” Kripke told Entertainment Weekly, according to the New York Post. “I would be willing to make sure there are enough villains and heroes around to continue a new story, but there’s no way I’m doing Season 6.“
The show is concluding its fourth season, and The CW has already enthusiastically renewed it for a fifth season. But even if Kripke does leave, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of “Supernatural.” When Al Gough and Miles Millar left “Smallville,” The CW renewed the show anyway, and ratings and critical acclaim has remained strong.
However, Kripke might not be alone in how many seasons the show should last.
“We don’t live at home,” said Jensen Ackles, one of the stars of the show, about how “Supernatural” is shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. “We don’t sleep in our own beds. Our families aren’t here. Our friends aren’t here. Our girlfriends aren’t here. To do it for another five years, I don’t know if I could handle it.“
Jared Padalecki, the other half of the Winchester Brothers, agrees … but with slightly different reasons.
“I don’t want to be cheese, and here’s Sam and Dean at age 50 sitting in wheelchairs,” Padalecki said. “I’d rather leave [fans] wanting more than get to the point where they boo you off stage.“

That's true, Chase. I guess you've gotta believe that the actors would be willing to back out if they saw the product as going south. ...If they are able to back out, that is. I wonder what the deal is with their contracts?
One of my biggest problems with the whole concept is that Kripke is backing out. If he was still going to be in charge I'd have a lot more faith in the success of a sixth season. The fact that he's leaving, or at least leaving the Head Boss Guy role, kind of implies that he sees the story as completed. And if that's true, what are we going to get besides an extended denouement?

Ack! I'm excited and scared at the same time!! I wonder what they mean by "ending" the arc. I'm sure they'll leave some stuff open, especially now that they've decided there'll be a next season. But I hope they complete the stuff with Lucifer! We can't just have him wandering about next season! Sammy-suit or no!

Warning! Concept spoilers for the sixth season following the link. If there's a way to hide spoilers here I don't see it, so if you don't want to learn some concepts the writers are throwing around then just avert your eyes and backspace quickly. Article!S P O I L E R S Going back to basics?? ... Ok, I enjoyed the earlier seasons, but I just feel like it's gonna kind of be a let down. I like shows to be building to something, not tumbling backwards. And I enjoy the funny episodes, but not too many of them, Mr. Edlund. I mean, it's not like this season hasn't seen plenty of standalones and humor, anyway. ::Sigh:: This is just kind of disappointing to me. I was holding out hope that there would be some carry-over. There'd better be some MENTION of it, or emotional scarring, or nightmares, or something. Not because I enjoy seeing the boys emotionally scarred, but you can't just come out of causing the Apocalypse (and hopefully preventing it) and then being like, "Right. Wendigos. Let's try our luck with a few of those." I also wonder what this means for Castiel. I hope they don't just lose his character when they decide to ditch the "angels and demons" route... but then again I don't want him humanized in the back of the Impala, and I don't want him appearing with archangely powers to help save them from said Wendigos, either. :/
