Continued from Burning Down History He sat across form Rowe in the diner’s booth chewing on one of the best hamburgers he’d ever had. And he’d had quite a few. At the moment Dean did not concern himself with rather gruesome stories that had brought him to this town in the first place, the cute waitress, nor Rowe’s ‘let’s get down to business’ attitude. For this moment only the taste combo of ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions and cheese all atop this melt in your mouth burger on a slightly toasted bun mattered. He let out a satisfied sigh of contentment as he chewed, swallowed, rinsed and repeated. It wouldn’t be hard for anyone to tell this he hadn’t eaten since early that morning. Only when the burger was done did Dean turn his attention to the man across from him. So Rowe had only waited about thirty seconds.

Kasen had wanted to begin exchanging information right away, but Dean had avoided the topic until his meal had arrived. Kasen watched the man devour the entire burger in the blink of an eye and wondered whether Dean might in truth be a moneyless beggar who'd stolen that classic car and been in the historical house for completely unrelated reasons simply so he could slap someone else with a food bill. The idea was flawed, obviously, but still it seemed possible as Dean's burger seemed to disappear before Kasen had hardly begun his own.
"Do they not have food where you come from?" Kasen asked as Dean turned his attention back to him.

Dean blinked at Kasen cluelessly past his napkin.
"Of course they have food," Dean replied. He tossed his napkin down and sighed contentedly. "So, Mr. Rowe, what do you know about what was going on in the Montgomery Estate tonight?"

(sorry for the long wait, man!)
Kasen gave a small laugh as Dean tossed the napkin to the table.
"So, Mr. Rowe, what do you know about what was going on in the Montgomery Estate tonight?"
Kasen sized up the stranger, taking a long slow bite out of his own meal as he considered how to best go about this. To say that Kasen had issues trusting people was a bit of an understatement. He was better than he had been right after he had been freed from the Cult, but he was still a long way from recovering completely. Everyone was a two faced liar until the proved themselves otherwise.
Kasen swallowed his food and took a drink to wash it down. Dean had proved himself somewhat already when he'd saved Kasen's life. He couldn't think why the man would have done such a thing for any reason other than because he was one of the good guys... And Kasen could use another point of view on this case.
"I went into that estate tonight because I have reason to believe that this town is the most recent residence of a group I’ve been tacking.”
Kasen reached into his jacket and withdrew a long envelope -containing clippings from newspaper articles, photocopied medical reports, and other random tidbits- and placed it down on the table between them.

Dean pulled the folder towards him and flipped it open. This guy was pretty organized. Did not seem to be a Hunter though, which Dean found strange and somewhat annoying. Civilians poking their noses into his world tended to get themselves hurt.
The young man stifled an annoyed sigh as a few of the articles caught his attention. Some were the same articles he'd found during his research phase. Others he hadn't.
"The scale of this thing... It's bigger than I thought." Dean rubbed his head thoughtfully with one hand while skimming through an article. People had been turning up dead all over this town, but many had gone missing in very close time frames. "One person couldn't do all this."
That certainly changed up the case. Dean had been going after one psycho spell caster, but if he was right about there being more than one person... Well... That'd be a bit tougher. Especially since now, more than likely, the little pyromaniac he'd chased out of the old estate had probably had time to warn his buddies. Dean looked up at Kasen, curious as to his thoughts.

"Exactly," Kasen replied. He leaned forward, elbows on the table at either side of his dish, food forgotten now.
"All the signs indicate a coordinated attack on the general population. The murder rate over the last two months has doubled from previous months and previous years. The news articles are somewhat vague, but there are many murders transpired at nearly the same time and were carried out in nearly the same way. First abduction, then they go missing for either 3 or 5 nights, then the bodies start turning up, dumped in seemingly random locations. In these cases there is always something, a part of the body, that has been removed."
Kasen tapped a finger on the table near the folder. "Thing is, sometimes it's something as small as a finger nail or a chunk of hair so the police seem to be ignoring the link."

Bits of people? Well this was sounding more ritualistic by the minute. These guys seemed pretty hard core too and therefore they probably weren't going to be put off too long just because Dean had intruded on there last murder session and let the prisoners go.
"We've gotta find these guys ASAP," Dean said. "Before they strike again and kill some more innocents."
Maybe there were more abandoned buildings in this town, some place the pyro and his buddies would be hooked up.
"So, how sure are you that it's more than one guy?"

Kasen nodded. "Like I said, it would be impossible for just one person to get all those people."
He quieted quickly as the waitress returned, an overly cheery smile on her pretty face. She noted Dean's empty plate with mild surprise.
"Can I get you anything? Dessert?" She asked him.
Kasen took the opportunity to take another bite of his own meal.

It did seem rather impossible that one person could do all this, but where rituals were involved, if they were the real deal, there was also magic. And if there was magic, Dean didn't think it was totally after the question. After all, Dean had only seen one guy in that estate.
Dean watched his new companion warily for a moment and then the waitress appeared. His serious expression vanished into charismatic smile.
"There is definitely something you could get me," he replied coyly, his meaning obvious. At her blush handed her his empty mug. "But right now I could do with a beer."

Kasen rolled his eyes as Dean flirted with the waitress. Honestly, how could that even occur to him at a time like this? There were murderous, ritualistic killers on the loose!
But he chose to remain silent, taking a chug of his drink instead and remembering the book he'd taken from the burning estate. It was likely last survivor of everything in that museum. He slid a hand towards his pocket, then decided against it. He didn't want to reveal everything he had in front of this possible new ally. Not yet.

Dean smiled, watching the waitress as she left. By the time he'd turned back to Kasen, the man's incredulous gaze seemed to have turned a little more thoughtful, as if something unseen was on his mind.
'Probably thinking about pyros and near death experiences,' he thought. Newbies were always stuck thinking on things like that. Dean frowned then, recalling the fact that he'd pretty much had to drag this man out of a burning building. Maybe he wasn't a newbie. Or maybe he just had issues.
'Huh...'
"Anyway. What we need to do now is do some recon. Talk to the relatives of the victims and any survivors." Dean pulled out a folder of his own and started to compare articles. "Hopefully that'll give us a better idea of what they want with people and... people bits. We've also got to figure out where they might go to try this again."

Kasen nodded, leaning in a bit to see Dean's stash of information.
"From what I read there weren't any survivors," Kasen replied, making sure to keep his voice low as a few new patrons past them by on the way to their table. "Wouldn't it be better to talk to one of the prisoners from tonight rather than a relative? Get a... a profile, a description of the people who captured them?"

Here was an article he hadn't seen. A girl, murder case unsolved. She'd been shot after walking a 'shady part of town' so the cops hadn't looked much further than a hit and run. But it seemed one of the relatives who'd identified her made a comment that she looked different. Her hair had been cut about 5 inches shorter. It was just a small part of a quote from the lady, something Dean might have overlooked. This Kasen guy had caught on though. Hair. A connection to the pyro witch.
"Wouldn't it be better to talk to one of the prisoners from tonight rather than a relative-"
Dean nodded. "Yes. Yes it would. Unfortunately I didn't have time to catch any names. Too busy trying to save your ass and get out of that building in one piece before we were barbecued!"
The waitress -Becky according to her name tag- chose that particular moment to show up with Dean's beer. She had a confused and mildly suspicious look on her face. The expression looked good on her...
Dean took the glass from the tray she held before she could hand it over. It was best if she didn't overhear any more than she had. He flashed her an innocent smile and thanked her for her fast service. She looked from him to Kasen then back to him, then replied with a simple "You're welcome" and left.

Kasen frowned in response to Dean before accepting that it was true and sat back with a sigh.
"Yeah..."
The waitress returned and Kasen went back to brooding, something he'd been doing a lot of lately. Only once she'd left did Kasen speak again.
"Ok, we'll do it your way. We'll split up, cover more ground, then meet back here tomorrow afternoon."

Dean gave a nod, though he couldn't help but give a small smirk at the civilian's authoritative tone. He gave a mock, two fingered salute.
"Aye aye!"
He took a long slug of his drink, then pulled out a pen from his pocket and began taking down several names from the articles they'd compiled, pausing every now and again for a thoughtful sip.
"We'll split 'em up. Half and halfish."
Dean tried noting the main law and medical people who might be of use. He was sure he had more experience talking to them than this Kasen guy. Kasen could deal with the majority of the civilians.

Kasen leaned in a bit to see what Dean was scribbling and noted the names he was taking.
"Half and halfish, huh? Are you sure you'll be ok talking to the cops and the doctors and that lawyer?"
To be honest, Kasen was a little relieved that Dean seemed interested in taking the police. He didn't mix well with law enforcement. Kasen was a decent actor, but police always made him nervous. He was a long way from home and the likelihood that anyone out here knew that "Kasen Taylor" was wanted as a suspect in a homicide was slim to none, but it was better to be careful. He'd slipped up in the past and almost lost his freedom because he'd been too eager. Now he had someone to help him, but he wouldn't let this stranger do all the work.
"I can take some of the med guys. There's a few of them."

Dean leaned back against the soft seat. "It's nothing I can't handle. I have done this sort of thing before."
Though in truth he'd usually had his dad with him. Dean was twenty-four years old and even though he was old enough to do just about anything legally in the US of A, he still had to be careful when talking to police. The easiest way to get information from the police was to pretend to be a federal official, but when you looked like you were just out of the academy, the cops tended to clam up and treat you like a kid. That's why usually he'd be the junior partner and his father took the role of the officer in charge. But dad or no dad, talking to the cops was still quite doable. He'd just have to go about it a bit differently.
"Actually..." Dean straightened a bit and pointed out a name. "This guy, Daniel Jameson. He's a doctor at the Sanderson Hospital, where all the bodies go to get analyzed or whatever. It looks like he's married to Himuna Jameson, some chick who found one of the bodies. You could take that guy. Kill two birds with one stone, you know?"

Kasen nodded. He remembered reading about the Jamesons.
"Ok. Sounds good." Kasen pushed his half eaten meal to the side and pulled out his wallet, tossing down enough cash down to cover his meal and half the tip. "We'll meet here 5pm tomorrow. Sound good?" he asked, standing up pulling his folder towards him.

Dean was surprised when Kasen suddenly stood.
"Dude, we've got 'til tomorrow. You've hardly touched your meal," he replied incredulously as he watched the man pull his folder away. Food was very important after all! "Well, whatever. But gimme your cell number. We'll update each other if we get any leads, all right?"

"Not hungry," he replied. And though he'd hardly eaten anything that day, he was very much not. Kasen quirked an eyebrow at the younger man. "And I don't have a cell phone."
Kasen had never had a cell phone. He didn't have anyone to call and no one left who would want to call him. And back in the day when he did, cell phones were not as popular. Man. Thinking like that made him feel old. One should not feel old if they were still in their twenties.
