"Well, I don't know if I have quite that many answers, but I'll do my best. See you soon, Princess."
And, turning, he moved quickly down the street to catch up to the old lady. The woman beamed at him.
"Went well, then. I dare say the lunch went rather well, after all."
He glanced back to make sure Alonna was out of easy earshot, and then snapped,
"Oh shut up and hand over the bags."
"Manners," the woman tutted, and Chase rolled his eyes.
"Oh shut up and hand over the bags, please."
She turned to face him, that inane, grandmotherly look in her eyes making his insides writhe all over again.
"That's the spirit, dear. Here you go." And she paused to offer the featherlight groceries over.

She grinned as he moved off, and then - feeling a ridiculous rush of pride in her own gift - glanced downward and allowed her hand to subtly flicker. She hadn't been so daring since she'd first learned to control when she faded, but right now it just seemed... alright. Alright to just be who she was, without having to hide. ...Well, maybe not completely. After less than a second of observing the concrete through her palm, she allowed herself to solidify again and looked around quickly, feeling an answering rush of fear. No one was looking, though. In fact, the street around her seemed empty save herself and Chase and his landlady, who were moving in the other direction. The smile flickered across her lips again, and she turned and headed back toward home. --------- Continued in Devil at the Crossroads
